As of September 30, 2005, EDC has also targeted at-risk and out-of-school youth ages 6 to 11 and 12 to 18. In addition to mathematics and Creole, these audiences learn about civic education, health, and environmental issues through Interactive Radio Instruction (IRI) programs broadcast five mornings a week by three radio stations. Even in times of political instability, distance learning is helping Haitians improve their access to education and information. The Formation ÃƒÂ Distance education programs have been broadcast regularly on the radio since the 1990s so that students and teachers, unable to return to school during civil unrest, could hear the lessons from home. The project is reaching an estimated 352 schools and 45,000 students, 48 percent of which are girls. In the final year of USAID support, EDC/EDA will assist non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to reach out to 327 affiliated schools following the IRI programs.
